GitHub Trending: calesthio/OpenMontage — an open-source video studio for agents

calesthio/OpenMontage calls itself the first open-source, agentic video production system — and this week it shipped into the trending list with 76,825 stars, 3,743 this week, as #1 Repository of the Day. Ask your coding assistant for a video and it doesn't just generate clips: it researches, scripts, plans scenes, generates assets, edits on a timeline, and self-reviews before you see the result.
What it actually does
- 12 production pipelines (explainer, talking head, screen demo, cinematic trailer, podcast repurpose, documentary montage, localization, character animation…), each a research → proposal → script → scene plan → assets → edit → compose flow with its own director skills.
- Works with Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf, Codex — the agent IS the orchestrator; there's no code orchestrator. Python provides tools and persistence; the creative decisions live in readable Markdown/YAML you can inspect.
- Reference-driven creation — paste a YouTube video you like and get a differentiated production plan (what it keeps, what it changes, cost estimate, sample before full production).
- Zero-key path — Piper TTS (free, offline narration), open footage (Archive.org, NASA, Wikimedia) and Remotion/HyperFrames composition. Free documentary montages are genuinely makeable without paying for anything.
- Real budget governance: estimate → reserve → reconcile, per-action approval above ~$0.50, configurable total cap (default $10). No surprise bills.
Why it's trending this week
Everyone knows 'AI video' means animated slideshows in most tools. OpenMontage's differentiator is uncomfortable honesty: it can make real-footage videos from free/open archives *for free*, AND it has quality gates that block 'slideshow risk'. That's a genuinely different claim from the usual prompt-to-video slop.
Who it's for
- Creators and teams who want agent-orchestrated video with a human at every creative gate.
- People prototyping open-source video pipelines — the tool/pipeline/skill layers are exceptionally extensible.
- Anyone who wants 'video of X' as a one-line prompt and doesn't mind working inside a structured production pipeline to get it.
What to check before you clone
- Python 3.10+, FFmpeg and Node 18+ needed;
make setupdoes most of the wiring. An AI coding assistant is required — this is not a push-button app. - AGPL-3.0 licensed — read the license; it matters if you build products on it.
- The demo videos are made with the system — but read the costs next to each: the luxe ones spend real API money. The zero-key path is real but expect DIY polish levels.
- Review the
docs/PROVIDERS.mdpricing table and the prompt gallery before your first run.
Agentic pipelines for media are here — and this is the first one that reads like a production studio, not a demo. Ambitious, opinionated, weirdly complete. Repository: github.com/calesthio/OpenMontage.
